charcoal on cotton rag
Based on existing gates, barriers, and architectural elements, the high contrast geometries and representative textures reference the weight and obstructive character of each object in life. As abstractions, the drawings serve much the same purpose as a barrier, halting our entry. Viewers question what is contained within or behind the mass, and unique identities of place are generated. Devoid of context the viewer is left to study each form and interpret any metaphor or functional use.
